Additional Speed Bumps?

Additional Speed Bumps?

In the last few years, several members have asked about additional speed bumps on our roads to discourage cut-through traffic, reduce vehicle speed, and increase safety in the neighborhood.  Our answer has always been ‘No’ because the Pender County Fire Marshal wouldn’t approve them.

Last week, Marshal Amy Burton, understanding our unique situation of Cedar Avenue being the only alternative road to the bridge, gave us permission to install additional speed bumps, provided that these are temporary and in use only in the summer months when cut-through traffic to the beaches is worst.

The RMO board is considering additional bumps, for example, at Cedar Avenue stop signs and, if affordable, at all stop signs.  Bear in mind that each speed bump will be reflective, commercial grade, marked with traffic cones, and will cost around $1,000 to initially purchase, have delivered and installed, and have pulled up and stored for the winter.  Continuing costs will be incurred each year for installation, de-installation, and storage.

Tell us what you think.  Are additional speed bumps in the summer ok with you?  Any other feedback?
